Seven photographs from the collection.

  • The orange, tiered spire of the Mahakaleshwar temple rising above a pillared hall of carved grey stone, with people standing between the pillars
  • The branches of a banyan tree lit bright green at night, hanging over an old stone wall and a metal railing, with the dark river and its far bank below
  • The ghats of Omkareshwar seen across the river, with terraces of orange buildings and temples climbing a hillside and boats and a crowd at the water's edge
  • The front of Daksina Bhawan South Indian Restaurant: a gabled porch with a tiled roof and teal scalloped trim over the name sign, a carved wooden frieze with three round medallions above a pair of wooden doors with glowing glass panels, carved peacocks on the pillars either side, tall potted palms, a white wrought-iron chair and table on green turf, and a standing sign with a painted dancer's face, on a wet brick pavement
  • A crisp golden dosa folded in half on a round hammered steel plate, with small steel bowls of sambar and red, white and green chutneys beside it, seen from above on a dark wooden table
  • A tall arched wall mural of a colourful South Indian temple tower beside banana and coconut palms, a lotus pond in front and an elephant with a rider at the right, with brass bells hanging from a wooden grid ceiling above and booths below
  • Two woven reddish blinds half drawn over backlit sepia murals of palms, riverside temple steps and a tree, with a brass lantern between them, and cane-backed wooden chairs and tables with menus below

The emptiest metro

10 October 2026, a Delhi Metro platform with almost nobody on it.

On 10 October the Delhi Metro closed the entry and exit gates at 45 stations for a protest. I was going from Delhi to Gurugram, and it was the first time I had seen a Delhi metro station this empty.

The langur that wasn't

A chai break in Bari, and a very still langur.

We were having chai when a friend spotted a langur some distance away. It never moved. So I zoomed in with my phone, and it was a kind of scarecrow.

A dip in the Narmada

26 January 2026, the river near Omkareshwar.

On the way to Omkareshwar we stopped at the Narmada at Barwaha, about 11 km from it, and I went into the water. The river was wide, flat and calm, and I filmed myself standing in it.
